CORPUS CHRISTI -- A visitor says his stay at the the Best Western off SPID and Airline came complimentary with crawly critters and bed bugs and he claims he has the bugs and bites to prove it.
But, management at the hotel says, not so fast. They tell us the man is simply looking for a free night.
Brian Unthank travelled here from San Antonio with his twin 11-year-old daughters. "They wanted to see the dolphins and go on the dolphin tours," he said. What they planned was a fun family vacation. But inside room 215 at Best Western Paradise Inn, he says they encountered anything but that.
"I woke up with a cockroach coming out of my nose," Unthank told us.
He says he has the proof, too. He showed us two dead cockroaches, that he claims to have collected from the room. The smaller, one he says came out of his nose, the large one he says he found when he turned on the lights.
"It was pretty gross," said his twin girls, Sidney and Shelby.
"I woke up , turned the lights on and a bunch of other cockroaches just scurried out of the room," Unthank said, "come to find out when I went to change my shirt to go downstairs, my daughter noticed a bite mark that just got bigger and bigger and bigger," he told us.
He showed us that bite and paperwork from Corpus Christi Medical Center, to include a prescription for the antibiotic Bactrim.
Management would not talk to us on camera, but they did let us in the room. Our cameras found the trash cans full, indicating there's been no maid service inside this room yet. The bed looks almost like not been slept in and we found no evidence of any bugs in the 10-15 minutes we spent inside the room.
Management says Unthank just wants a free stay, something he tells us, he's entitled too after his sleepless night at the hospital.
"Give me some hotel stays, and I want it closer to the beach," he said. Hotel management, for now, is denying that request.
Unthank also says he and his girls threw away all their clothing, fearing they had been infested and he wants reimbursement for that, too.
But the hotel management claims they have bug resistant slip covers and just underwent bed bug training to help staff spot potential problems. They say room 215 is bed bug free.
