CORPUS CHRISTI - Talking on the phone while driving has been the cause of countless accidents and close calls on the road, but one device promises to help you gab away while still keeping your hands on the wheel.
It's the Griffin Hands-Free Device and we put it to the test in our most involved experiment yet.
Like most, Kirsten Hogan admits to talking on her cell phone while driving all the time, even though it takes her hands off the wheel.
But, the Griffin Hands-Free Device promises to help make you a safer driver while still chatting away on your phone.
In order to test this item, we needed a place with plenty of elbow room. So, we came over to the parking lot right across the street from the beautiful Whataburger Field, and we built a course.
First, Kirsten had to run the entire course while using her cell phone as she usually does.
Meanwhile, I was on the other line, asking her specific questions so she had to pay attention to the call, instead of just focusing on the road.
Mitch: "When is your birthday?"
Kirsten: "June13th, 1989."
Mitch: "Do you have any pets, and if so, what are their names?"
Kirsten: "umm...whoops!" (Kirsten runs over a marker during a turn after she switched the phone from one hand to another) "Two cats and a dog: Consuella, Callie, and Nellie."
And by the end of the first test, Kirsten had run over two markers.
Kirsten: " That was really hard!"
So, it was time to see if the Griffin Hands-Free Device made any difference in Kirsten's ability to navigate the course.
We quickly dialed in the radio station, plugged the phone in and we were ready to go for test number 2.
Mitch: (voice over car speakers now) "Kirsten, I got a tough one for you. I need you to spell Mississippi, as in the Mississippi River."
Kirsten: "m-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i."
Mitch: "Nicely done!"
Kirsten: "Thank you."
Up to now, no markers were squashed as Kirsten rounded the final turn and the final question.
Mitch: "When Mary Poppins is singing her famous song, what are the first few lines of the song, please?"
Kirsten: "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" (singing) "Aw, I sang that wrong." (laughing)
And she crossed the finish line without hitting a single marker - the Griffin Hands-Free Device really seemed to make a difference!
Kirsten: "That was much easier."
With that, the test was conclusive - keeping both hands on the wheel really does make a difference in how well you can drive.
And with an item like the Griffin Hands-Free Device, that task has never been easier.
Next week, on Does It Work? we'll be testing the Shed Pal.
This is a device that promises to suck the loose fur off your family pet and help keep it from collecting on your floor and furniture.
