SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Boxing promoter Don King says Hector "Macho" Camacho "excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style."

Camacho died today in a Puerto Rico hospital, four days after being shot in the head. He never regained consciousness and was taken off life support at his family's direction. The man who once reached the pinnacle of boxing, winning several world titles, was ambushed in a parking lot in his hometown outside San Juan on Tuesday. Police say packets of cocaine were found in the car where he and a friend were shot. The friend died at the scene.

Camacho fought professionally for three decades. He fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.

Ed Brophy, executive director of International the Boxing Hall of Fame, says Hector "was a good champion. Roberto Duran is kind of in a class of his own, but Hector surely was an exciting fighter that gave his all to the sport."

Camacho was 50.
