CORPUS CHRISTI --The Flour Bluff boys and girls each win their respective Region Team Championships as area swimmers and divers splash past talent from their competitors that spanned from Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio. The Hornets Kristina Prewit was named Female Swimmer of the Year. She won the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. Prewit was also a member of the record-setting 200 Freestyle Relay team and the 400 Free Relay.

Meanwhile, Scott Bucy (Flour Bluff) and Nan Jackson (Gregory-Portland) split the Male Swimming Coach of the Year honor. While Trey Collins won both the Male and Female Diving Coach of the Year. He shared the former with Dan Murphy (Flour Bluff). The coaching awards are for the genders they coach, not the gender of the coach.

10 swimmers, 1 diver, and 5 relay teams. That's how many local athletes won gold and qualified for the State Swimming and Diving Meet today (see list below).

New region records were set in six events. It all started with Flour Bluff's Boys 200 Medley (Oliver Garnier, Andrew Byerly, Justin Bires, and Brendan Tober) and their time of 1:42.11, which barely beat out the mark of 1:42.78 from the 2007 Flour Bluff team.

The very next race, both Bethany Sutter (2:00.54 / Gregory-Portland) and Kara Treacy (1:59.96 / Flour Bluff) crept under the record in the 200 Freestyle (2007 Kalyn Davidson / 2:01.38). Treacy held the better mark, and took home the gold. The Hornet swimmer also shattered her own Region mark in the 500 Free (5:19.51 / 5:26.78).

Freshman Jack McLaughlin continues to impress. The Calallen swimmer won gold in both the 50 Free and 500 Free (4:52.29), setting a region record (2010 Juan Aldape / 4:52.82) in the latter.

More records fall in the relays, starting with the 200 Freestyle Relay. Both girls teams from Flour Bluff (Stephanie Southard, Kara Treacy, Maddy Carroll, and Kristina Prewit / 1:42.72) and Gregory-Portland (Bethany Sutter, Cailey Solis, Emily Munroe, and Bethany Davidson 1:43.79) crossed under the old region mark (2011 Flour Bluff 1:43.94) in one of the days more exciting races. Again, the Hornets held on to claim gold and advance to state.

In the next event, the Hornet boys (Oliver Garnier, Lucas Mestas-Nunez, Brendan Tober, and Andrew Byerly) set the new mark in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:29.51). They broke the record set by the school's 2011 team (1:30.29).
