Eagle Ford Shale Traffic Causes Small Town to Search for First Responders

PAWNEE - In a small town of about 300 people, the Chief volunteer firefighter says they're experiencing a lot of Eagle Ford Shale related traffic.
Texas Highway 72 runs right through Pawnee. With the increased amount of oil and gas-related traffic also comes an increased amount of accidents.
Chief Joel Saenz said it's tough to get volunteers to stay volunteers at the Pawnee Fire Department.
Right now, the department has about ten people who rotate shifts but Saenz says it's difficult to be ready to respond since most of them have jobs as well.
To be a first responder, each volunteer must pass a 96 hour program with Angel Care Ambulance in Beeville.
Saenz says after the volunteers finish the training, some become discouraged because they spend less time fighting fires and more time responding to other emergency calls such as accidents.
Nevertheless, the Chief says Pawnee needs more volunteers because more accidents are happening in the quiet town lined by a busy highway.
