CORPUS CHRISTI - The family of a man killed by a drunk driver says they're reliving the nightmare because the man convicted of hitting their son is asking for a new trial.
In December 2007, 28-year-old Adam Ramos was involved in a minor accident but as he got out of his car, police said Wes Goode drove by and hit and killed him. In October 2008, Goode was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter and given 20 years in prison. Friday he was in court again claiming he was never given a fair trial.
Today the victim's family said they were absolutely shocked to hear that the case is back in court. Rey Ramos says the pain he felt five years ago when he lost his son is returning. "You killed my boy, Wes. You killed my boy, Adam Ramos. Deal with it now. Serve your time. Stop crying," said Ramos.
Wes Goode, the man convicted of hitting Ramos' son, says his original attorney didn't put together a proper defense. Goode's current defense team claims Goode was drunk but did everything he could to avoid hitting Adam Ramos. When Ramos and his wife heard on Six News that Goode was back in court, Ramos says he got physically ill, "My blood boiled. I actually got sick. I had to go lie down," he said.
The couple says they're upset nobody told them about the hearing in advance. They say they wish Goode would stop trying to fight his sentence so they can be at peace.
Goode's hearing wrapped up late Friday afternoon. The judge has yet to decide whether he will get a new trial.
