Community Remembers Walter Furley

CORPUS CHRISTI - Hundreds of people turned up for the celebration of life ceremony for local news icon Walter Furley.he passed away from cancer last week. Today, those who knew him shared their memories of the man with the golden voice.
It seems as though no matter who you ask, there's a different part of Walter's personality, that they recall. He was a "funny-man," a "news-man," a "family-man."
"I was taken to the newsroom to this larger than life man. And I waked up to him and said, hi, my name is Dave Johnson and he said hello David," said Dave4 Johnson.
And while many remember his time at the Channel 10 news desk, others remember his sitting at the back of the choir, belting out hymns at every practice and performance.
"Again, the first time I met him was through music."
Nathan Kime and his wife Betsy met Walter in the WindJammers, a singing group.
"We all, always enjoyed listening to him and every once in a while, he would tell us a joke. I wish I could remember some of them," Betsy said.
The Kimes say that Walter had many passions in life, but very few matched his love for music. In fact, she and some of the Windjammers were walking up to Walter's front door the night he passed away, only to find out that they had arrived a moment too late.
But the show went on.
"But they wanted us to stay and sing and we walked over outside the bedroom window and sang those hymns. And that was very special also," said Betsy.
It was a musical send off for a man who touched many lives with his voice, whether it was in front of a camera lens, or onstage, few will forget Furley and the legacy he leaves behind.
