CORPUS CHRISTI - Nueces County took a man to court this week saying he hadn't kept up his mother's property up to code.
When Lionel Lopez's mother passed away, he took on the task of taking care of her house on FM 736 near Old Brownsville Road.
Monday morning, Lopez was in court after the county had cited him for not doing enough to take proper care of the property.
A representative from code enforcement testified that they had first contacted Lopez in December 2011, and after that sent another two letters.
They claimed that there was tall grass, weeds, debris that could cause fires, and brush. Lopez said that ever since he received the citations he has been trying to take better care of the house. He says he mowes the lawn, removes the brush, and even boarded up the windows. But it seems his attempts to clean the property were not enough.
When Lopez took the stand, he admitted that with his busy schedule, it's hard to take care of the house, "The house has been vacant for a long time. It's true that I do neglect that property. Even two weeks go by and that grass is high again."
Once hearing both sides the Justice of the Peace found him guilty.
We caught up with Lopez after the hearing, and he told us he was upset that one of his neighbors would complain about the property, "It makes me feel liek somebody is out to get me. That's how it makes me feel. And I hate feeling this way."
Lopez was orded by the judge to bring the court recent pictures of his properties. The judge will use those pictures to determine Lopez's fine.
