CORPUS CHRISTI -- A burglar broke into South Shore Christian Church overnight, leaving behind shattered glass and ransacked files.

Whoever did it took stuff from the office and seemed to be searching for cash.

But, they also left something behind. The burglar appears to have been on a desperate and sad search for cash.

"Its just a shame that they had to break into church to get money," said Abraham Pruneda, a church member and the man in charge of cleaning up the place. He was the first to discover the break in Thursday morning.

Crews are now trying to repair the mess left behind by the burglar, but there is an indication that whoever did this felt some sense of remorse. They left a letter in the office.

"I think he kind of felt bad that he did it, because of the letter, I think he didn't want to do it, he just needed the money.

That letter of remorse, written to the church with the personal touch - as one sign reads. Right by it, another sign apologizes for not being able to give cash assistance right now. It appears as though they unwillingly did that, though. "They hardly keep money in the office," explained Pruneda, "but they found some change because there's change all over on the floor in the other office."

Pruneda said he is upset to see someone feel so desperate they felt driven to steal. But, like any true Christian, he's also willing to forgive. "To rob a church, I think, its pretty bad," he said, "all we can do is just forgive them, pray for them."

Crime scene did recover that letter as evidence.

The exact amount of damage and theft is not known just yet, but church members and staff did plan to clean up and replace the broken glass Thursday.
