CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A total of 38 players from 19 area schools comprise this year's South Texas Pre-Season High School All-Star Team. The student-athletes will be recognized at the Eighth Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Wednesday, January 25, at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in downtown Corpus Christi.

The large-school division (Classes 4A and 5A) features 17 players from eight schools. Perennial powers Calallen and Carroll, who both reached the state tournament at their respective levels last season, placed four players each on the squad. The Wildcats, a 4A state finalist for a second consecutive year in 2011, are led by three-time honoree senior Wyatt Mathisen. Also returning for a third time on the honor squad is Carroll senior Courtney Hawkins, who helped lead the Tigers to the 5A state semi-finals last season.

Alice, Flour Bluff and Moody seated two players on the team, while King, Victoria East and Victoria West placed one player each. In addition to Mathisen and Hawkins, other returning All-Stars include Alice senior A.J. Perez and Carroll senior Oshea Dumes.

The small-school division (1A/2A/3A/private) honors 21 players from 11 schools. The Bishop Badgers lead the way with four selections, followed by John Paul II and Robstown with three each. Ingleside, Refugio and Sinton check in with two players apiece, with single representatives coming from Falfurrias, Orange Grove, Port Aransas, Rockport-Fulton and West Oso.

The lone player to repeat in the small-school division is Orange Grove junior Chris Solano, who helped the Bulldogs reach the 3A area round last year.

Votes were received from 33 high school coaches and selected media throughout South Texas. The coaches' participation is the highest in the eight-year history of the honor squad.

Tickets for the January 25 event are priced at $50 and are available by contacting the Hooks at 361-561-HOOK. Corporate table sponsorships for the banquet and the Astros CAREavan Luncheon, slated for Friday, February 3, are also available. Proceeds from both events benefit Hooks Help.
